Let’s imagine a little southern rock, a little funk, a taste of the heavier side at times, and an all out original assault of melodic cornfed tunes. As the imagination focuses, a group of musicians, who call themselves JEB, bring their style of Indiana cornfed funk n’ roll to a wide array of generations. As JEB approaches their seventh year of making music, it becomes evident that their style and originality is like none other. JEB is: Brock ”starr” Stahl (guitars and vocals), Kevin “paco” Higgins (bass), Brent “sneakin” Eakins (drums and vocals), Greg “seeds” Simmons (guitars and vocals).
Brock formed JEB in late 1997 while living with Eric Carter (drums 1997 - 2001) and John Johann (bass 1997 - 2003). With many influences ranging from Ween to the Grateful Dead, the three members of JEB worked hard on developing an original songlist with chosen covers thrown in. After their first impromptu gig on October 27, 1997, which was thrown by the Great Enoch, they acquired John Trainor (guitar and vocals 1997 - 1998). After playing the local scene for a few months John Trainor left the band. In May of 1998 John Johann suggested to Brock to enlist fellow friend Greg Simmons (who played with Trainor and Johann in a band named Strange Design.
By the time February 1999 came around, JEB had enough original material to begin recording sessions for their debut release entitled SHINE. This became an eleven song compilation, which was recorded by fellow musician and friend Bob Green at Area 51 Studios in Newburgh, IN. After a long financial and emotional strategy, SHINE was finally released in September 2000. The album proved to sell moderately to close local knit of friends and fans. The single Where the People Shine reached number 1 on a local college radio station.
As the pressure of life and the road came into factor, Eric Carter had to leave the band. Taking very little time to recruit for the upcoming fall tour in 2001, Brock hired Brent Eakins to come in and fill the spot. Brent has helped JEB bring the fullness back into the music.
Even before the release of SHINE, JEB started honing in on their live show and playing area. They extended their area to four states and received opportunities to play with Vince Welnik (The Tubes, Grateful Dead), Leftover Salmon, David Nelson (NRPS), Dark Star Orcehstra, and many others.
In 2003 JEB introduced a new member, Kevin Higgins. Also, they extended to a fourteen state circuit. In July 2003 as they were beginning their summer tour, JEB released their sophomore effort, THE MEETING PLACE. This album includes thirteen original cornfed tunes. It also includes some guest musicians on a six piece horn section and some piano playing.
2005 is here and JEB keeps funkin and rollin on. The boys release thier third album on Funkster Records: Corn-Fed Funk N Roll. New Venues are being played and, of course, there will be return visits to the old stompin' grounds. JEB would like to thank all the venues and most importantly the fans across the country who keep supporting their style of original corn-fed funk n roll music. |
